Teacher Unions and Tenure
I think that teacher unions and tenure have good things about them, but they also have bad things too. Teacher unions will help protect the pay that teachers are paid and make sure that it is fair for them. The tenure also protects the teachers and allows them to have a guaranteed job. The school is not allowed to fire them or let them go. The tenure gives teachers security that they need. Just as the teachers union and the tenure protect the teachers in good ways, they also protect the teachers in bad ways. If a teacher is under tenure and they are not very good at their job, they are still protected and there is no way for the school to fire them. Once they get that they are in and there isn't much the school can do about it even if they are not the best teacher for the school.

I agree that it is too hard to get bad teachers out after they have tenure.

ReplyDeleteI think that tenure should be harder to earn as you talked about in class. It should be earned not just received after 3 years for not gettig fired. The teacher should be evaluated and receive it only under guidelines that have been met. If a teacher has tenure, they should also still be evaluated every few years to be able to keep it. They shouldn't just receive it and be left alone for years to do what they want.
ReplyDeleteGREAT response---and thanks for the email, too! Maybe it might be a good idea to provide a longer probationary period, coupled with district-supported professional development seminars, interviews, and a body of work to prove they EARNED their tenure?
ReplyDeleteI agree that there are positives and negatives. It is sad when students are not getting the education they should be getting, but there isn't much to do about it. I agree that it should be something that is earned and not just handed to teachers.
